A Brief History of the No Margarita Mocktail

The No Margarita mocktail is a modern creation in the world of mocktails, with its origins stemming from the craft mocktail revival of the early 21st century. Designed by Cotswold Cocktail School and inspired by their love of Margaritas, a No Margarita uses a Turmeric Tea Blend of warming spices to substitute tequila.

Taste and Flavour Profile

The No Margarita Mocktail is a beautifully balanced aromatic and spiced infusion:

  • Turmeric Tea Blend: Turmeric is the golden child of the superfood movement, and this beautifully balanced aromatic herbal blend raises it to the next level. The ginger and turmeric notes substitute the earthy subtleties of Tequila Blanco
  • Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice enhances the citrus elements, bringing a tart and zingy contrast to the sweetness of the agave nectar.
  • Simple Syrup: Simple syrup (a mixture of sugar and water) adds subtle sweetness to harmonise the flavours.
  • Fresh chilli: The slight bite from the chilli is convincing, bringing depth and edginess.

Food Pairings

To enhance the No Margarita experience, consider these delectable food pairings:

  • Guacamole and Salsa: Classic guacamole and salsa with tortilla chips provide cooling relief from the heat of the cocktail.
  • Tacos: Spicy Margaritas pair wonderfully with a variety of tacos, from grilled shrimp to carne asada, enhancing the flavors of the fillings.
  • Ceviche: The citrusy notes in ceviche harmonize with the Margarita, creating a refreshing and spicy combination.
  • Spicy Wings: For an extra kick, indulge in spicy chicken wings, which complement the cocktail's heat.

Bar Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Margarita or a rocks glass (personally we prefer the Margarita glass)

Ingredients

  • 100ml Turmeric Tea Blend - 3g per 100ml
  • 30ml freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 20ml simple syrup*
  • 2 thin slices of fresh chilli (without seeds)
  • 2 sprigs of coriander
  • Garnish with a lime wedge and chilli coin
  • Salted or spicy* rim

*we love using Tajin seasoning

Method

  • Pop the kettle on, measure the Turmeric Tea Blend (the tea will absorb some of the water so you'll need to steep 200ml), pour over boiled water, steep for 5 minutes and strain.

  • To add a kosher salt/spicy rim, rub a citrus wedge around the rim of the glass.
  • Put some kosher salt onto a plate and gently twist glass (rim side down) onto the plate
  • Add all the other ingredients into a shaker, add a generous handful of ice and lastly the hot tea.

  • Shake until cooled and double strain into a rocks or margarita glass. Garnish with a small sprig of coriander and chilli slice.

  • There’s no need to chill the hot tea prior to use as the ice in the shaker will chill quickly whilst being shaken.

*Simple syrup - 1 part sugar to one part water. Gently heat in a pan until sugar has dissolved and allow to cool.
